Scotiabank's CSV starts with a filter column that is mostly empty and describes the statement period rather than the transaction, and it keeps a sub-description separate from the main description. Fininja ignores the first and merges the second into the description.

How to download your Scotiabank statement

These steps cover Scotiabank chequing, savings and credit card accounts.

  1. Sign in to Scotia OnLine on desktop
    Log in at scotiabank.com. Transaction download is not available in the mobile app.
  2. Open the account
    On the “Accounts” page, select the chequing, savings or credit card account you want.
  3. Choose the statement period
    Pick the statement period from the dropdown, and select “Load more” until the period total appears so every transaction is included.
  4. Download the file
    Select the download icon at the top of the screen and choose your format. Fininja reads Scotiabank's CSV export; the same screen also offers a QuickBooks download.
  5. Upload the file to Fininja
    Check the staged transactions, correct any categories, then save them to your history.

A note on accuracy: these steps follow Scotiabank's own Scotiabank Help Centre: download transactions, last checked July 2026. Bank interfaces change from time to time, so the exact labels may move - the general path (sign in, open the account, find the download or statements option) still holds. What Fininja does with the file

The file is read, whatever shape it is in
Fininja's importer is format-agnostic. It inspects the file you upload - headers, or no headers at all - and works out which field is the date, which is the description and which is the amount. Once it has seen a layout it remembers the signature, so the next statement in the same format is quicker.
Nothing is saved until you say so
Imported transactions land in a staging area. You look them over, fix anything that was read or categorised wrongly, and only then do they join your transaction history.
Likely duplicates are flagged
Re-importing a period you already loaded is normal - date ranges overlap. Rows that look like something already in your history are marked as potential duplicates in the review step so you can leave them out.
Categorization learns from your corrections
Categories are predicted by a model trained on your own past corrections, not on a generic merchant list. Transactions it cannot place fall back to a usage-capped OpenAI lookup. Every correction you make makes the next import better.

Scotiabank import FAQ

The first column of my Scotiabank CSV says things like 'Current statement period'. Will that confuse the import?
No. That leading filter column is one of the specific things Fininja's Scotiabank tests cover - it is recognised as statement metadata rather than being treated as the transaction description.
What happens to the sub-description column?
It is merged into the main description, so a row reading 'pos purchase' plus 'Coffee shop' arrives as one useful description instead of two half-descriptions.
Can I import a Scotiabank credit card the same way?
Yes. Credit cards are exported from the same account activity screen as day-to-day accounts, so the flow above applies to both.
Does Fininja need my Scotiabank online banking login?
No, and it never asks for one. There is no account linking and no aggregator sitting between you and your bank. You sign in to Scotiabank yourself, download the file, and upload that file to Fininja. Fininja only ever sees the statement you choose to give it.
What happens right after I upload the file?
The importer works out which column or field holds the date, the description and the amount, then puts the resulting transactions in a staging area. Nothing is added to your history until you have looked through them and approved them. Rows that look like something you have already imported are flagged as potential duplicates so you can skip them.
What if a transaction lands in the wrong category?
Change it. Categorization runs on a model trained on your own corrections, so the fix teaches it your habits - the same merchant should land correctly next time. Transactions the model cannot place fall back to a usage-capped OpenAI lookup.
