A real Amex CSV and a real Amex PDF statement are part of Fininja's parser test suite, and an automated test covers the Amex column layout.

The layout we test against looks like this:

The Amex CSV has no header row and separates charges from payments and credits into two columns - the same shape as the TD credit card export, which is why one set of rules covers both.

How to download your Amex statement

These steps cover American Express cards issued in Canada.

  1. Sign in to your American Express account
    Use the Amex site in a desktop browser rather than the app, which offers fewer export options.
  2. Open Statements & Activity
    Go to the statements and activity area, where your recent activity and past six billing statements are listed.
  3. Choose what to download
    Pick recent activity or one of your past six billing statements - Amex scopes the download to that range.
  4. Download as CSV
    Choose the CSV option (Quicken and QuickBooks are also offered) and save the file. A PDF statement works too.
  5. Upload the file to Fininja
    Review the staged transactions before they join your history, and correct any categories that are off.

A note on accuracy: these steps follow American Express Canada's own American Express: download transactions & statements, last checked July 2026. Bank interfaces change from time to time, so the exact labels may move - the general path (sign in, open the account, find the download or statements option) still holds. If yours looks different, tell us and we will correct this page.

What Fininja does with the file

The file is read, whatever shape it is in
Fininja's importer is format-agnostic. It inspects the file you upload - headers, or no headers at all - and works out which field is the date, which is the description and which is the amount. Once it has seen a layout it remembers the signature, so the next statement in the same format is quicker.
Nothing is saved until you say so
Imported transactions land in a staging area. You look them over, fix anything that was read or categorised wrongly, and only then do they join your transaction history.
Likely duplicates are flagged
Re-importing a period you already loaded is normal - date ranges overlap. Rows that look like something already in your history are marked as potential duplicates in the review step so you can leave them out.
Categorization learns from your corrections
Categories are predicted by a model trained on your own past corrections, not on a generic merchant list. Transactions it cannot place fall back to a usage-capped OpenAI lookup. Every correction you make makes the next import better.

Amex import FAQ

Do payments to the card come through as well?
Yes. The Amex export keeps charges and payments or credits in separate columns, and the sample in Fininja's test suite includes both, so a payment arrives as money in rather than another expense.
Can I combine Amex with my other accounts?
Yes. Import a file from each account and they all land in the same dashboard, which you can then filter by date, category or description.
Does Fininja need my Amex online banking login?
No, and it never asks for one. There is no account linking and no aggregator sitting between you and your bank. You sign in to American Express Canada yourself, download the file, and upload that file to Fininja. Fininja only ever sees the statement you choose to give it.
What happens right after I upload the file?
The importer works out which column or field holds the date, the description and the amount, then puts the resulting transactions in a staging area. Nothing is added to your history until you have looked through them and approved them. Rows that look like something you have already imported are flagged as potential duplicates so you can skip them.
What if a transaction lands in the wrong category?
Change it. Categorization runs on a model trained on your own corrections, so the fix teaches it your habits - the same merchant should land correctly next time. Transactions the model cannot place fall back to a usage-capped OpenAI lookup.
